Gay Outdoor Club: Canoeing
Canoeing
has gained an enthusiastic following in GOC (including a number
of women). Events in the UK generally take place in hired Canadian
Canoes or double kayaks that are suitable for complete novices.
Kayaks can also be hired by experienced canoeists. Enthusiasts bringing
their own canoes are most welcome. The pace is generally leisurely
and downstream. Basic paddle strokes are easily mastered. Events
abroad often involve white-water rafting, which similarly requires
no previous experience, only a reasonable level of fitness. Recently
there has been a digression towards sea-kayaking and kayaking events,
which require previous experience or training provided during the
event. There is relatively little danger. There may be some upsets,
but you will be supplied with life jackets and other safety equipment.
However it should be understood that participation is at your own
risk and that you will be responsible for your canoes, since the
club cannot accept any financial responsibility.
